Prologue

Life amongst my people on our Native American reservation felt natural. Outside of the reservation I had the uncanny ability to stand out from anyone you had ever met. My dark brown hair and gray eyes were a huge contrast to one another.

Hell, I couldn't even grasp the concept that I rupture out of my body morphing into a bizarre freak of nature and transition back into being a man. My ancestor's curse on my dad's side of the family stems from generations ago. Single handedly my life was fucked up and the quality of it by the worst type of hex's, causing the mutation in our lineage. The ones cast from broken love couldn't be broken or suppressed by anything except the source.

Cursed, each generation, morphed into unappealing monsters covered in long profuse fur, reminiscent of your favorite cat Patches. My eyes now glimmered and shifted wildly from grey to a smoldering silver mercury color. Branded by tribal wings that appeared like tattoos trailed down my back, one wing for each attempt to terminate my own life. Hideous and branded for everyone to recognize my sins, my weakness and my fuck ups.

I determined after my second failed attempt; and woke up to my grieving family. No matter how much pain I experienced, I would suffer through the cruelty of life and suck it the fuck up every miserable day. My family would in no way ever agonize because of me and my stupidity again if I could help it. Nonetheless, I felt broken and soiled by the transformation, that caused me to appear as an enormous disgusting beast proved to be the entire reason I attempted suicide besides taking my best friends youth. I fought to keep my emotion in check. One day at a time becoming more of an asshole that I'd grown to despise further daily.
Anguish and incomprehensible turmoil consumed my being. Each thump of my heart reminded me I'd been, in spite of everything, alive. Breathing nonetheless that being the most anyone could expect from me. My prayers every day were for the Gods to terminate me. A tortured soul, unworthy of a life. Labored breaths came to me one at a time. Alive once again. "Why did they bring me back from death again? They should have saved someone who deserved to live, who wanted to."
I felt the pain of everyone around me as if the grief and torture belonged to me personally. Life felt as though my inherited gift was thorns that shredded the essence of my soul one empathetic sensitivity at a time. To see people for who they truly were, for yet another day was part of my gift. The viciousness that lies within people is apparent to me. Not only through feeling their emotions but part of my ability is that I can see the ugliness of their soul as bubbling black tar on their flesh. I instantly know if a person is as shitty on the inside as they are on the outside. They can't deny the ugliness from me and they can't cover that shit up. No amount of makeup could hide the ugliness a soul radiates or in few the beauty.
Two nurses in my room whispered as they took my vitals and kept the pain meds dripping into my iv. I hadn't even opened my eyes yet from my latest attempt. My ability hadn't left me, I could tell you so much about either of the nurses from being in my presence for only three minutes.

Sammie Sidelinger lives in the seasonal coastal state of Maine with her three amazing boys and her sweetheart she fell in love with while in middle school. Yes, in this instance the bad boy did work out for this girl next door. They are thrilled to raise their three handsome children in the place where if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes it will change. Sammie tries to look at life the same way as she does the weather. Nothing is permanent including work which she fortunately or as some may think, unfortunately found out, allowing her the time to follow her dreams. Her love for the supernatural and the stories passed through generations has encouraged her obsession with the paranormal to move forward with her writing. She feels like creativity sparks the flow of her blood stream, spilling her essence onto paper to share with others. When she isn't writing to purge her deep emotions you can find her spending time with her energetic young family (who embraces and encourages her level of crazy) or cuddled up devouring books. Excerpt (NSFW)

Devlin grabbed his coffee mug and crossed over to his office. He powered on his tablet and scrolled through his emails. Nothing much exciting beyond a few tech newsletters he subscribed to and an ad for penis enlargement. He deleted that one and settled in to peruse the article on 3-D printing. Halfway through his read he was hit with the odd certainty that something was off about the placement of his paperclip dispenser. Frowning, he leaned back in his chair. “Hey, were you messing with my stuff?”

A grunt came from the other side of the wall. “Yes, because clearly I have nothing better to do than drive your OCD ass crazy.”

“Well, you are a maniacal motherfucker.” Devlin made a point of loudly plopping the dispenser back into its proper position. “And it’s not OCD. I use the stapler more often, so it should be front and center, not the paperclips.”

“Admitting you have a problem is the first step in recovery.”

“Asshole.” Chuckling, Devlin finished up his coffee and returned to the kitchenette for a refill. He was waylaid on the round trip to his office with Leo’s request to fetch his reading glasses from the lab. After tossing out a few teasing digs about his partner becoming an old man, Devlin made tracks down the hall and fished his badge from his pants pocket.

The moment he stepped into the lab he was struck once again with the peculiar sensation that something wasn’t quite right. As much time as he spent in the space, it was practically his second home. So with that said, if his Spidey-sense was telling him that a detail wasn’t as it should be, he was damn well going to listen up.

Rubbing his chin, he surveyed the room, mentally checking off boxes as he cataloged each detail individually. Trash can in corner—normal. Lab coats on their proper hooks? Yep. Workstations prepped and ready for—

His mental inspection skidding to a halt, he stared at the empty test tube holder resting on the station across from him. The vial had most definitely been there when he and Leo locked up yesterday.

So where the hell did it go?

Determined to get to the bottom of that mystery, he retraced his steps to Leo’s office. “Did you do something with one of the vials from batch 39?”

Leo tore his focus from his monitor, his brow furrowed. “No. Why?”

“It’s missing.”

“What?”

Well aware of where Leo’s thoughts were jumping, Devlin shot up his hand. “Don’t burst your coronary. We don’t know that this is a repeat of Texon.” But after having one of their prized formula’s ripped off by a competitor several years ago, the fear was there of it happening again. Even with all the precautions they’d taken to prevent a reoccurrence, the threat was always present. There was only so much they could do.

Leo vaulted from his chair and rushed from his office. Devlin stayed hot on his heels. Once inside the lab, Leo confirmed Devlin’s suspicions with a string of colorful obscenities. Raking his fingers through his hair, he shot a narrow squint at the panel obscuring the security camera in the corner. “Let’s pray they were too sloppy to cover their ass.”

What were the chances someone would be foolish enough to stroll in here and steal Xtacy without disguising their identity? Wisely deciding to keep that woeful dose of reality to himself, he followed Leo back to his office. With a quick click of his mouse Leo pulled up the link to the security system and located the time stamp for last night. He fast-forwarded through an hour or so of uneventful footage before a blip of motion flashed across the screen.

Leo’s features hardened. “Got the son of a bitch.” He rewound a few frames and pressed play.
On the footage, the lab lights flickered on and a woman stepped into view. Devlin blinked. “Wait a minute. Isn’t that—?”

“Sidney.” Her name fell from Leo with the same amount of bemusement that plagued Devlin. They both leaned closer to the computer as she sashayed to the workstation and picked up the test tube.
Devlin shook his head. “I don’t believe it. Not of Sidney. No fucking way.”

“Then what the hell are we looking at?” Leo demanded, his tone flatter than a desert highway. Despite the lack of inflection in his voice, Devlin knew his friend was hiding a world of hurt while he processed the visual evidence of Sidney’s potentially traitorous activity.

“I don’t know, but let’s not jump to conclusions yet.” Come on, Sid. What are you doing? His heart knocking, he waited for the moment she’d put the vial back and scurry out of there, completely unaware of the real criminal lurking in the shadows about to abscond with the Xtacy formula. The wish was a desperate shot in the dark on his part, but he refused to give up hope. No matter how thin it was. When the test tube went flying out of Sidney’s grasp and smashed onto the floor, he straightened with a jolt, renewed optimism crashing over him. “She dropped it. That’s why it’s missing.”

A fraction of the doubt lifted from Leo’s gaze but his shoulders remained tense. “It still doesn’t explain what in the devil she’s doing in the lab.”

“Who knows? Maybe she was just curious—“ Devlin broke off abruptly when Sidney ripped off her blouse and wrenched down her bra. All coherent thought beating a hasty retreat from his head, he stared at the sheer magnificence of her breasts. She cupped their bountiful weight and tweaked her nipples. The real estate in Devlin’s briefs suddenly became a lot more cramped. Gripping the edge of the desk, he risked a quick peek in Leo’s direction and noticed his friend was equally enamored with the unexpected show.

Leo swallowed hard, his Adam’s Apple bobbing. “We probably shouldn’t watch any more of this.”

“Yeah, we shouldn’t.”

They both kept their attention fused to the screen. Sidney’s hand crept inside her panties. He and Leo adjusted their flies simultaneously. She bit her lip, her head falling back against the side of the workstation as her hips moved in rhythm to the motion of her fingers. Even with that miniscule scrap of fabric concealing the view, the sight playing out in front of them was tantalizing as fuck. She was completely uninhibited in her wild chase to the Big O finish line. The continued reel of her gasps and moans sizzled along Devlin’s nerve endings, but it was his and Leo’s names screamed at the top of her lungs when she ultimately came that sucker punched him like a two by four.

Holy shit. Jerking his gaze to Leo, Devlin discovered he wasn’t the only one sledge hammered by that startling last part of her self lovin’ session. “Uh, she just came while thinking about us.” There was no denying the obvious. A person didn’t just randomly scream someone’s name at the height of passion.

Leo scrubbed a hand over his mouth, his wide-eyed stare still glued to his computer. “Fuck me.”

“Uh, dude? Pretty sure that’s precisely what she’s saying.”

“It’s not the end of the world,” Emma whispered. “We all agreed to come and do this for Ellie. Just suck it up.”
Suck it up? Easy for her to say. Emma loved the outdoors and all that stuff. Outdoors to Nic meant the park. Or the pool. Now here she was, like a deranged teenager, spying on a scent ritual that was sacred to Ellie’s people. All for what? To catch a glimpse of Jake Wolfe. That philandering mutt.
She couldn’t help herself, she peeked over the ceremony site where Mrs. Wolfe or as she preferred to be called, Barbara, motioned the guys into the woods. Ellie said they’d be on watch. Something moved on Nic’s leg. Oh God. Was it a snake? She peered into the darkness and swatted away whatever crawled on her.
The things she did for her insatiable crush on Jake. It’d been that way from the first time she’d met him. And what a way to meet a man that had been. If first impressions were everything, Nic got the best first impression of Jake ever. She’d visited Ellie’s house for a weekend sleepover when they’d been in college. Their gazes met and she swore she’d been electrocuted. She’d been rooted to the spot like an idiot, staring at his hunkiness in all his wet and naked glory with stars in her eyes. Well, that’s what he loved to tell her.
From that moment on, Nic knew she couldn’t let Jake get to her. He was the world’s biggest flirt, used to women falling to his feet. And while she wasn’t familiar with the whole love thing, she knew all about lust. He’d smiled one time. That’s all it took. For him to show her that dimple she adored and her girly bits had readied for surrender. Not to mention her brain cells had gone AWOL. It was pathetic. It was also the reason why she’d let herself get talked into sitting on a picnic blanket, with her knees to her chest. She still couldn’t figure out what made the noise in the grass.
Maybe Ellie was wrong. What if there were snakes there? A firefly zoomed around her. She watched the tiny bug light up the dark with its yellow glow, zipping and buzzing back and forth in front of her. Some bugs weren’t so scary. From far away.

My paranormal stories can be anything from wolf-shifters (my favorites) to witches, demons and anything in between. My contemporaries are usually anything from soldiers to corporate romances.

I am addicted to shoe shopping, chocolate (but who isn't, right?) and Dunkin' Donuts coffee.

EXCERPT

The darkness blurred and shimmered, bringing to life a man of moonlight and darkness: Aryne.

Before him Aryne could see her, lying in bed, tears of loneliness staining her pillow. She made his heart ache. He softly stepped to her side. His hand touched her face and gently pushed back her hair. He leaned over and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, turning her dreams from sadness to joy. Her body arched toward his touch as the skim of his hand, the heat of his skin traced the edges of her curves. He stepped back…and then within the shimmer of dreams disappeared.

Night after night her loneliness cried to him. Unable to resist, he came to her. Subtly he inserted himself into her dreams, into her arms. Aryne knew it was wrong. As a guide, his job was to bring sweet, peaceful dreams. But no one affected him like she had. He was unable to resist comforting her, drawing her into his arms, covering her body with his…but only in her dreams. There Aryne stole the passion from her lips, igniting an ache in his body that would not go away.

Touching her shattered him. He knew instinctively that her touch would be his downfall. Her touch could keep him here in this splinter of his world, isolated as all of the Outcasts were. Generations had gone by; those exiled had died long ago, their children mixing amongst the races of the universe.

He had tried to stay away, fearing this. He was adrift, swept away, drowning in her passion, breaths away from losing himself. Giving in, acknowledging the power she unknowingly had over him would condemn him, keep him here if she was unable to travel to his world. Very few could navigate between worlds. And this world would drain his power rather than enhance it. Even the short time he spent there took its toll on him, the drain only in abeyance when he was in her arms. Try as he might, he could not resist her siren call. Only by controlling her and the passion between them could he make sure that he would not become lost. Lost in her. Trapped forever in her world.

He had done his best, gentling her to his hand, to his control. She knew the unspoken rules, knew the consequences. He played them out in her dreams, a dark symphony of passion and restraint. Perhaps unforgivable for a guide, but he could not resist. And just her body was no longer enough. Eventually he would capture her heart and soul.

A man of shadows, it would be during the midnight hours of her slumber.
