Excerpt:
Expletives ran through Yaseke’s mind as he felt stirring under the shirt. That was the last thing they needed. It was darker, but not dark enough to hide… that. He ran through a litany of disgusting things, each image worse than the next, trying to take his mind off the fact Dade’s hands were right there, so close to his cock.
“Almost….” Dade exhaled hard in frustration, leaning over to better see the tightened knot in the near-darkness. “Yes! Got it!” He tugged hard on the knot and pulled it open.
Yaseke couldn’t hold back his groan or the way his cock began to harden rapidly. He glanced down just as the sides of the shirt opened and exposed the way it jutted from his groin. Dade reared back.
“Oh. Shit. Um.”
Yaseke wanted to die of embarrassment. He wanted to apologize. He wanted to push Dade’s head down until his lips touched Yaseke’s aching need and swallowed it whole.
A vibrating hum tickled his shypsoid bone.
Dade was laughing. Not just that, he was even doing what Ryker called giggling.
Indignation filled Yaseke at first, but then he smiled. Humor welled up inside him, and he hummed in amusement. He lifted his hips, pushing his cock against his stomach and the other yanking on the shirt until it came out from under him. He sank back down and covered himself up with the shirt. Spread out, it covered quite a bit more of him.
Dade collapsed back in the leaves. “Sorry, sorry,” he gasped.
Yaseke shook his head ruefully. “Shouldn’t I be the one apologizing to you? You were just trying to help me, and I sorta stood up in salute.”
Dade started snickering again.
Yaseke’s voice rose. “Well, it’s not like I could help it. You do know that our isitziu are compatible, right? You were almost touching me, and your breath was so warm on my stomach. It just happened.”
Dade’s laugh faded. He shifted uncomfortably, then shivered when a hard gust pushed through the trees. “Can we talk about that?” he asked slowly. He rubbed at his neck and then lay back down.
“What do you want to know?” Yaseke fought back a yawn. He was shocked Dade was still willing to lie there so close to him, though Yaseke knew the attraction wasn’t only on his side. Accepting, much less adapting to a new planet and species the way Dade was trying to do, wouldn’t come so easy.
“I don’t understand it, these marks and the attraction between us. What does it mean to be compatible?”
Yaseke considered how to answer. “Well, I don’t know all the medical jargon, but basically our isitziu markings are part of our cellular biology. Almost like gender characteristics, actually. But these go beyond male or female to a more basic compatibility. They indicate genetic matches to produce ideal offspring, which is why our pheromones seem to appeal so much to someone with similar markings.”
“So, there’s no choice involved? It’s all just a chemically induced biological imperative to breed together?”
Shaking his head, Yaseke smiled. “You haven’t claimed me yet, have you? Being close to me hasn’t forced you to join with me, even though we both feel the attraction.”
Dade shifted. He sounded embarrassed when he spoke. “I’m not exactly Caeorleian, though.”
“Close enough.” He could barely make out the side of Dade’s face, just a hint of his profile. “We could join right now, if we both wanted to. But it takes more than just being compatible, for most of us. Ryker and Seral were different. They are more compatible than any I’ve ever seen, their markings virtually identical. The doctors have postulated it is because he got a purer injection of Seral’s DNA than you and Nicklaus. You may not be full-blooded, but even Caeorleians can resist the pull. Fieo has not touched the other male who came from the ship, Nicklaus. I believe they will join in besedad sooner rather than later, though.”
“Nicklaus needs time. He suffered too much. Inside, he’s scared to death, all the time. It’s awful.”
Yaseke frowned. “You all did, Dade. You all suffered.”
“Not the same. It wasn’t the same thing at all.”

Hawke hugged him. Jamie was too surprised to react right away. When he did, some sort of strange dumbassery rose to the surface. “Awww, you let me inside your bubble. I’m going to breathe up all the good air.”
Hawke snorted. “Shut up.” He tensed as if he meant to pull away. Jamie closed his arms around him, keeping him in place.
“I’m being serious.” He turned his head, burying his nose against Hawke’s neck, and inhaling loudly. “You’re going to suffocate.” A low laugh escaped Hawke, feeding Jamie’s ridiculousness. He didn’t try pulling away again. Jamie’s heart swelled. He pressed his mouth to Hawke’s throat, breathing heavily. “I’m breathing on you too. You’re going to end up with some dreaded disease.”
Hawke’s hands found his waist. “You’re definitely killing me.” Jamie didn’t miss the husky note to his voice. The pads of Hawke’s thumbs brushed his sides—skin on skin. Jamie’s body reacted the same as Hawke going down on him. He wouldn’t last long if the man ever willingly touched him in such a way. Jamie untangled himself before he could embarrass himself.

Finding a way to make things work, when it feels like everything is against them, is something they will have to work hard to overcome.

Will Colt be strong enough to handle Alexis's past?

Or will it be too much?

Prologue:

“Mommy, I’m hungry,” Maddison spoke from behind me. The sound of her sweet little voice only made my heart ache more intensely.
“I know, baby. Mommy will find you something real soon. I promise.” I slowed the car to a stop and reached for the bag in the passenger seat beside me. Digging around, I pulled out the package of crackers I had taken from our last stop.
Turning around, looking back at my sweet little girl, I forced a smile. The last thing I wanted her to see was how unsettled I felt inside. She looked so tired, and seeing that in her eyes made me feel like a worthless mother.
Tearing the package open, I handed her the two crackers. “Here, sweet pea, eat these for now. I know it’s not much, but I’ll get ya something else real soon, okay?”
Maddison nodded her head and took the crackers from me. “Do you still have juice left in your cup?” I asked, and she nodded her sleepy little head once again. “Good, we’ll be stopping real soon.”
Turning back to face forward, I took in a deep breath and began looking around. I had passed a sign that read “Welcome to Brooklet” about a mile back. As I looked around, I found myself wondering if there was even a hotel here in this small town. It was definitely a big change from San Diego.
With only a little over two hundred dollars left to my name, I knew I had to make it last. The thought of not being able to take care of Maddison made me sick to my stomach.
I had no choice; I couldn’t go back. I had to leave, had to hide out. He had crossed a line that could never be fixed. A life like we were living had to stop. I couldn’t go on in fear any longer; we deserved so much more than that.
I knew I was taking a chance by going back home to Palm Beach, but I needed my family more than ever. I knew it would be the first place he would look, but it was the only place I could go.
Keeping Maddi safe came first. It was my job, and for the last six months, I had failed her and the memory of her daddy, Troy.
So the choice to leave in the middle of the night, when Seth least expected it, was an easy one to make. A choice I would never regret, no matter how much I had to sacrifice.
Maddi needed stability and security. When she had that, my needs would come, but not until then. “I need to potty, Mommy,” Maddison announced from the backseat.
The decision had just been made; it looked like we would stop in Brooklet for now, at least for tonight.
Looking around for a place to stop, I pulled into the parking lot of a small restaurant. It was just after seven at night, and the lot appeared deserted. Two vehicles were parked up close to the entrance. The rest of it was empty.
Holding Maddison’s hand securely in mine, we walked side by side toward the entrance.
The smell of grease engulfed me when I opened the door, and it smelled amazing. It had been hours since I had last eaten anything.
“Is it just the two of you?” an older woman with a genuine smile asked. I nodded my head as she led us to a small booth in the back.
“Do you have a restroom my little girl could use?” I asked as I looked around the small dining area.
“Just down that hall, to your left. Can I get anything started for the two of you?” she questioned.
“Yeah, um, a grilled cheese and chocolate milk if ya got it?” I replied as I led Maddi toward the bathroom.
“What are you having darlin’?” she hollered after me.
“Nothing thanks. I’m not hungry,” I said over my shoulder as I nudged Maddi along. I forced a smile as I hurried toward the bathroom.
“Mommy, your tummy is growling.” Maddi looked up at me as I continued to guide her toward the back.
“No, baby. Mommy ate this morning. I’m good,”
I assured her.
I had decided when we left San Diego that I would only allow myself one meal a day. Even though I would kill for a juicy burger and fries, I had to use my head. The money had to last until I found a source of income.
When we made our way back to our table, I thought for a moment we were at the wrong one.
There was a large salad at one side, and on the other a bowl of applesauce. A large soda with a cup of chocolate milk sat in the center.
I stood looking around in confusion, just as the lady who greeted us put a plate of fries on the table. “Ma’am, I didn’t order all this. I can’t…” I began to say, as panic set in. She held up her hand to stop me.
“Don’t you worry yourself over it darlin’. It’s all been taken care of.” She grinned and nudged her head toward the door.
I looked up just as a tall, broad man pushed open the door. He tipped his head toward me and winked, a dimpled grin gracing his lips. I stood staring at him until he disappeared through the exit.
“That sweet man just bought the two of you dinner.” She placed her hand on my shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “There’s kind people out there, sweetheart. Colt Thompson is a good man.”
Her final words left an emptiness in my chest. A good man. I wasn’t sure they existed anymore.
Besides my father, I didn’t know many others. Troy, Maddison’s father, was a good man—a man who gave his life for his country and never got the chance to know he was gonna be a father.

My brother was also a good man, but other than those few, I was starting to feel as though good men were only mythical.

EXCERPT

Two weeks ago…
Why am I here again? Mike was having a hard time playing aloof when the woman he’d pined for was clearly off the market. He knew it was coming, and had all along.
Isa stood in the circle of Toryn’s arms, a radiant smile on her face. They belonged together, always had. Neither was willing to admit it before for some ridiculous reason.
Resisting Isa was impossible. She was everything he craved and knew he should stay away from. She had a funny way of frazzling the wards Tremaine placed on him, bringing his magic to the surface. It had been ages since he wanted to tap into that power on purpose. He’d long since learned it was better to shut it down than play with fate. With Isa, he didn’t feel like such a freak because he’d witnessed some of her own weird issues.
Shaking his head, he went back to the makeshift bar, and ordered a beer from Toryn’s old boyfriend. Funny how he seemed perfectly at ease in the same room as Isa and Toryn. Then again, he was flirting with a gorgeous brunette, and a woman at that. At least someone was able to move on.
Leon acknowledged him with a sympathetic smile. “Hey, Mike. What are you drinking?” “Beer, any beer.” He sighed as he leaned against the counter.
Expertly popping off the metal lid, Leon slid a bottle his way. Mike dipped his head in a nod, and tried to tip.
“Nope. Keep it. I’m not taking anyone’s money tonight.”
Mike harrumphed and moved to the corner of the room. He heard the door again and watched a strawberry blonde walk in. She knocked knuckles with some dude who looked eerily like the harder, tatted up version of Toryn.
Mike couldn’t tear his eyes away from the woman as she walked to the bar. Petite, curvy, and wearing a smile full of confidence. His dick woke up for the first time since Isa ended their fucking-friends situation.
He could sense the woman’s essence calling to him from across the room. This party was packed with Others. He’d avoided mingling with their kind for so long, he couldn’t tell what most were. However, the new arrival felt a lot like Tremaine, which made her a mage. Same as Toryn’s look-alike, and several other people in the room.
Her magic sparked his, but he didn’t care. He needed a distraction and she was the one thing taking his mind off Isa.
With a drink in hand, she crossed the room, her honey-colored eyes locked on his. “Dance with me.” It wasn’t a question.
He nodded, took the last sip of his beer and set it down on the nearest table.
She gulped down her drink and placed her glass beside his bottle.
Her eyes lit with desire and there was a command in her voice. “Come here.”
“With pleasure.” He moved closer and her hands landed on his shoulders before he wound his arms around her waist. Soft skin over lean muscle he wanted to explore.
“I’m Gwen. You?”
One corner of his mouth lifted. “Mike. What brings you here?”
Her brow arched as she took a look around. Mischief danced in her eyes. “You’re not what you appear, are you?”
He frowned. “What do you mean?”
“You’re hiding something.”
Shaking his head slowly, he lied through his teeth. “I have no clue what you’re talking about. And you didn’t answer my question.”
She let out a tiny laugh. “A co-worker convinced me coming here tonight was a good idea. I didn’t think so, until I saw you.”
He relaxed slightly, but felt the sparks dance along his spine as she tiptoed up, her breasts pressing into his chest. Desire erupted, and all he could think about was sweeping her off her feet, and carrying her to the nearest bed.
She whispered against his ear, “Relax, Mike. I have all the time in the world to learn your secrets, and I have a feeling it will be worth the wait.”
“Don’t know about that. Not much interesting here.”
“I sense a beast lurking under the surface. That’s exactly what I’m looking for.”
Mike moved back, and Gwen looked up at him with a curious glint. “Too fast?”
“Beast?” His alarm bells pinged off the charts. She knew something about him. Sensitives had never been able to tell what he was in the past. Even when his magic bled through, everyone thought he was a simple human.
“Don’t tell me you aren’t going to be wild when I get you home and strip you down.”
Desire stared back at him. Maybe he was being paranoid. Or maybe she knew what tiger’s tail she was pulling. Maybe the feisty mage would be safe.
Swallowing back his apprehension, he taunted, “Depends. Are you wild?”
“With the right man, you bet. You may be him.”
“Perhaps.”
“Let’s get out of here. You can get to know me.”

EXCERPT

He smoothed her hair and rubbed a thick tendril between his thumb and forefinger. “I am Gunnar.” He pronounced the name Goo-nar.
An emblem of the sun, surrounded by a circle, had been branded on the back of his powerful hand. Penny touched the scar while he held a length of her hair, recognizing Freyr’s sacred insignia from her textbooks. “The pain must have been excruciating.” Without thinking, she lifted the old wound to her mouth and laid kisses along its perimeter before pressing a kiss to the icon inside.
Tremors vibrated across her lips when they touched the ancient symbol and her body tingled with the contact. The brand grew warm and then hot against her mouth, though it did not burn. She ran her tongue over the thick scars to erase the heat, and then licked the center, finishing with a tiny swirl.
Gunnar’s gasp of surprise was the last thing she expected when she lifted her head. He released her hair and drew away.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know what got into me. Have I offended you?” She’d always been popular with men, and comfortable around them, but her behavior with Gunnar was bold, even for her. She sat up. “Am I under some kind of spell?”
Gunnar shook his head. “I used my powers to heal you, but your free will remains intact.”
She searched his face for clues about what to do next, because desire shone behind the wary expression in his eyes. Something else shone there, too. Gratitude. Penny waited for Gunnar’s reply without letting go of his disfigured hand.
He said, “Kindness isn’t something I’m used to finding. Perhaps you’d be less inclined toward compassion if you knew what I’d done to deserve this brand of servitude.”
She reached out and draped an arm around his neck to bring him closer. Their gazes locked and held. Gunnar’s eyes were like pools of ice blue water that pulled her in and down.
Her breathing slowed while the sound of her heartbeat rushed blood through her ears. “I am Penelope. And if you’re from Alfheim, I know who and what you are. I just don’t understand why you’re here.” How could she deserve his rare, benevolent gifts? She was just an ordinary woman from an ordinary town, barely scraping by.
His warm breath grazed her cheek in shallow rushes, lifting goose bumps across her skin. His wide, firm mouth smelled of sweet ground parsley and fresh-picked mint. “Sometimes we get what we need, simply because we ask. That’s the beauty and power of the unexpected.”

Her Immortal Viking is very different from anything I've read and not at all what I expected. Not that any of that's a bad thing, because it's not. I found it enjoyable and liked how the author put real Norse mythology in with her story.
Any readers out there looking for something different, original and a quick read will enjoy this story.

James watched as she picked up her onion sword and dipped it into her mouth, extracting one and swirling it around her mouth before taking a drink. He sipped on his scotch, churning it around his mouth and letting it cleanse him as it went down his throat, bloomed in his chest, and spread through his stomach. He relished the burn.
The bartender came over to wash some glasses near them, and after catching James’s eye, lowered to whisper to him, “Are you her decoy?”
“What do you mean?”
“She’s in here almost every night, beating men off, explaining why she doesn’t need to actually have a boyfriend to not be interested. I was just wondering if you were pretending to be her boyfriend, so she wouldn’t get hit on. I’ve been tempted to offer myself.”
“No, I’m not pretending to be her boyfriend.” James couldn’t hold back the grin at the image of Margaret fighting off potential admirers.
“Are you really her boyfriend?” The poor man’s eyes were huge with disbelief, and James could completely understand. She did put off the cold fish vibe, but he ached to change that.
“I can hear you two idiots,” Margaret hissed at them. Turning on the poor boy, “You are no longer my favorite. Where’s Marcy? She’s almost as good at my martini as you are.”
“Sorry. She’s not in tonight, you’re stuck with me.” He grinned at her boyishly, and James watched her blush. Was she flirting with the bartender? He left to go help someone at the end of the bar, and James turned to her.
“You like him, huh? Is he the one you want to take to dinner?” Her lucky date for tonight would get dinner out on the show.
“No! He’s a child!”
“That’s right. That pesky age thing.”
Before he could elaborate, a sharp-dressed CEO type walked up to Margaret on her other side. The man exuded money, from his Armani to his Rolex. James watched with interest.
“Hey there sweet thing. Can I buy you another?”
James felt a prickle of jealousy and again questioned himself. He had no claims on her, in fact, he was here to help her get a date, in spite of what the producers said. Even so, he cheered inside his head when her mouth shaped the word no, before snapping shut. When she re-thought her response, his unease returned.
“Sure, why not?” Her voice was blithe, but James saw the underlying tension and resignation to the simple statement, like she knew exactly what was going to happen next, and dreaded it, participating only to please the show.
As soon as the bartender brought another drink for the two, the man bent down close to Margaret’s ear. James didn’t hear all of it, but he managed to see red darken his Maggie’s chest and knew exactly what that meant, he’d done it to her himself. Before he could react, she’d thrown her drink in the CEO’s face, who took it all with aplomb.
Removing his handkerchief from his breast pocket, the man wiped his face before smirking and leaving. No more words were spoken.
“What the hell did he say to you?”
Angry tears sounded in her voice, and sudden understanding dawned on him. Men were fucking pigs. “He told me to come back to his place so he could stick his dick in my hot, wet, cu—“Never mind. Forget I asked.” Her eyes shined at him, as if tears were just under the surface, and James wondered if it was always like this for beautiful women with no self-esteem. Margaret knew she was pretty, but didn’t give herself enough credit for the rest. That’s why she kept her standards so high, so she didn’t get hurt. And the men who came on to her were total assholes. James knew she’d only allowed the wanker to buy her drink because he’d told her to lower her standards. If she kept up with her normal routine, that man wouldn’t have stood there more than thirty seconds.
James held out his arms, trying to be comforting, and to his surprise, Margaret sort of slumped towards him. He took a step forward and enfolded her in his arms. It was similar to last night’s embrace, except she wasn’t trying to beat him senseless. Instead, she was just… limp.
Stroking her back, feeling her warmth through the thin material of her dress, he inhaled the scent of her shampoo, lavender and vanilla. Scents that should remind him of his gram, only on Maggie, they made him want her naked.
He was such a fucking tool, no different from the others.
She relaxed in his embrace, her own arms coming around his waist and squeezing him, pressing herself against him. Something welled up inside, something a little foreign, something that surprised him. He realized he cared for her, and not just enough to sleep with her. James cared for Margaret enough to want to know what happened to them after the sex.
“We should just go. I’m hopeless.” She sniffed into his chest, and he could barely hear her. “I’ve thrown my drink at one guy, and I’m hugging on you. Nobody’s going to want to go out with me now.”
“I do.” His words shocked him, but no less for the meaning behind him. He did want to take her out. He wanted to make her feel desired, undo all his words of yesterday and the day before. He regretted them, immensely, and didn’t know what to do to take them back.
She looked up at him, her brow furrowed with confusion, but didn’t take a step back. Still holding her with one arm, he reached his other to smooth the wrinkles on her forehead, and shrugged, murmuring, “Masochistic tendencies.”
Her lips curled into a smile, and she laughed. He’d never heard the clear tinkling sound resonating from her before, and suddenly he lost all of his senses. Something changed in both of them. As abruptly as she started laughing, she stopped, and James watched as her gaze focused on his lips. Maggie’s tongue snaked out and stroked her bottom lip, leaving it sparkling wet, preparing it for him. James was lost. He wasn’t sure if she raised herself, or if he lowered his face, but in the next second, their lips were on each other’s.
