Book Tour: "The Great Outdoors" by Becky Moore

Today I have the honor of having Becky Moore on my blog to do a guest post relating to her new book "The Great Outdoors". Becky welcome to the Romance Book Junkies.

Choose Your Own Adventure … with Romance Books, by Becky Moore

The American Heart Association tells us that physical activity improves your quality of life. And nothing gets my blood pumping better than a little action and adventure. Whether it’s reading an exciting book, watching an intense movie, or playing with my boys … I love a good heart-pounding experience.

When I first ran across Decadent Publishing‘s  1Night Stand series, I loved them. For one thing, they’re quick reads that fit into my busy schedule. For another, they’re super sexy. My 1Night Stand combines two of the things I love most: sexy romance, and outdoor adventure.

We’ve just gotten back from a great outdoor adventure, ourselves, a week-long trip to Sedona, Arizona. While we were there, we hiked what felt like hundreds of miles across millions of years of sandstone, limestone and shale in the Grand Canyon. We hiked in the footsteps of the Ancient Pueblo People, and checked out Saturn with the Red Rock Astronomy club. And the fresh air … sigh. We’ve got great air quality in my little town in North Carolina, but it was nothing as compared to the fresh, crisp, unpolluted air of one of our nation’s beautiful national parks.

The Great Outdoors capitalizes on the fresh air and beautiful mountain skies of the southern Appalachian Mountains in Georgia. We love to hike that portion of the great trail, though it’s by no means as taxing as my home-state hikes around Mt. Mitchell (the highest point east of the Mississippi). But with Tallulah Murphy and Mitchell Weaver, I was able to capitalize on the best outdoor activities my soul mate and I take part in as often as possible. We share a love of the outdoors and adventure, and have passed it on to our 14 year old son. If it involves kayaking, bicycling, hiking, playing soccer, or swimming, count us in!

If you’re more of an armchair adventurer, might I suggest the following romantic adventures? They’re good for your heart!

1.       The Great Outdoors, by me
2.       Crazy Hot, by Tara Janzen
3.       Shadows at Midnight, by Elizabeth Jennings
4.       Hit Hard, by Amy J. Fetzer
5.       Out of Control, by Suzanne Brockmann
6.       Hide and Seek, by Cherry Adair
7.       All the Queen’s Men, by Linda Howard
8.       Going Overboard, by Christina Skye

Book Tour: "Treasure's Gift" by Sascha Illyvich

Today I have Sascha Illyvich on Romance Book Junkies to do a book spotlight and share a excerpt with us from her new book "Treasure's Gift". Let's give her a warm welcome.

Treasure has always had a thing for Mark, her best friend.  When he drops in unannounced, she's glad until she realizes his workload is keeping him occupied when the only thing on her mind is jumping him.   With the help of a very sexy friend, she uses the one thing designed to make Mark slow down and take notice.  What will he do at the temptation of two beautiful women?

Mark looked at Treasure, wishing he could just fall asleep in beautiful pools of her eyes. Or swim naked with her.
His cock hardened uncomfortably in his trousers.  Could Treasure feel his arousal?
Did she know the depths of wickedness he'd love to explore with her?
He fought a yawn from the overbearing heat and length of his flight.  Closing his eyes, he leaned back in the chair and let out a breath.  The hectic schedule his travel required of him would exhaust anyone.
The fact that his property was in Kingwood, he had to fly into Houston Intercontinental and then drive all the way back to Sugarland where Treasure lived added to his building fatigue, but hell, he’d do anything to see her standing before him, looking at him with a hidden mischievous grin and her hands on her hips.  Nipples would ache for him and jut out proudly while her oh so kissable lips moved.
“I’ve got all sorts of ideas, babe.”
“I’m sure you do,” she nodded.  “Just come to bed when you’re done.”
She walked away, ass swaying from side to side with each step she took.  Hands reached for the hem of her shirt and pulled it over her head before she disappeared, leaving him with a view of tanned skin, no bra and the need to slake his own primal needs tonight.
“Damnit!”  Mark knocked back the drink and slammed the glass on the table.  He certainly didn't look forward to the next few weeks of very long Saturdays despite being so close to achieving his financial goals.  Not if Treasure intended to taunt him with hints at her naked flesh.
He had to do something about his raging erection.  Maybe a cold shower.  Or maybe a long, hot shower featuring Treasure stepping into the large tub with him, setting her delectably round ass against his cock and coating his dick in her juices would...
Sadly, Mark showered quickly, ignoring his hard on.  He dressed in pajama bottoms, a tank top that showed off his muscular arms and pale skin.  Bedtime included a nightcap, a large one designed to knock him out so he’d sleep without dreaming of Treasure’s body blanketing his while her pussy milked the life out of him.
Mark slumped back in his chair, head hanging forward.  He took a sip of bourbon, let the liquid burn his throat before he took another longer swig.  Sitting up, he looked over the now neatly organized stack of papers
“Treasure?”
His lips curled upward.
The bedroom door opened.  “Mark,” The soft lilting of her voice reignited the spark of arousal.
Mark set his glass on the desk and waited.  “Yes dear?”
“It’s bedtime.  Come to bed.”
She sounded needy. Another man would have missed the subtlety of want in her voice.  “I have things to do before bed first.”
“Then I’ll come to you.”  Her voice dripped with unmistakable husky lust.
Mark arched a brow.
A moment later, Treasure appeared before Mark wearing a black see through teddy that flowed out at the bottom with lace trimming and barely reached the top of her thighs.  A scrap of lace hid both nipples and obscured his view of her sex.  Dirty blonde hair fell around her shoulders in loose curls, bouncing with each step she took towards him.  Hands started at her shoulders, smoothed down her arms, over full breasts and down her round stomach until stopping at her hips. Treasure stuck one leg forward, took a tentative step closer to Mark and stopped mere inches from him. “Well?”
His jaw dropped.  He blinked several times to make sure he was seeing right before focusing on her expression.
She frowned.  “You think I’m fat.  I knew it.”
“No!” He stood and took her hands in his.  His stomach tightened from the contact while his cock stirred against his pajamas.  Blood pumped faster down south and his mouth went bone dry.  “No, that’s not it. It’s just…just…wow Treasure.  I’ve dreamed of this for years.”
“What do you intend to do now?”  She tilted her head and her mouth curled into a wicked grin.

Book Tour: Guest Post & Giveaway "Scent of a Witch" by Bri Clark

Today I have Bri Clark here doing a guest post, book spotlight and a awesome giveaway. Welcome Bri, to Romance Book Junkies.

10 Reasons You’re ParaAdict

10. You are in the paranormal romance section of your local library so much the librarians ask you where a book is instead of looking it up.

9. Your book club (where you’re the president) talk about the characters on a first name basis without using titles or author names. This information is a prerequisite to join.

8. You’re significant other has actually accused you of having an affair when you call out the latest vampire’s name in your sleep.

7. There are so many books with paranormal titles on the spines your mother thinks that you are taken up “the dark arts” and sent her preacher over to talk to you.

6. You’re family has a system for getting dinner for when you are reading a new book. Phrases like “It’s a series…call Dominoes” are used often.

5. You’re children have learned the Febreeze can act as a dewrinker and temporary wash because you were too caught up in a book to do the laundry.

4. There was a family meeting. It was decided that a garden would be planted because mom can never get to the grocery store. You’re son suggested planting Wolfsbane and Garlic to see if it had an effect you.

3. You haven’t watched TV in three years. But something called “Vampire Diaries” changed all that.

2. At work you hide your ereader under your keyboard and sneak in chapters when no one is looking.
And the number one reason you are addicted to paranormal romance…

    1. You have outright lied to someone saying you are sick to avoid a date, work, playdate, reunion, or get together just to stay home and read your new download.

Now granted some of these are a little extreme and my tongue and cheek sense of humor did embellish. However, I’m unsorry to say that experience created some of these. In fact I’m downright unashamed. And I can prove it.
I’ve never done number 1. Once my bff had plans to hang with me and saw that I had downloaded a new book via Facebook. She didn’t even call just assumed and she was right. LOL

So how about it? Are you a ParaAdict?

Giveaway rules: In the comments below leave me an example either from the top ten list above or your own special experience of being a paraAddict.
I’ll give away an eBook copy of Scent of a Witch to the best one.

Book Description
Maeve da Paer has lived her life free from the restrictions of the world of sorcery and the Board of Witchery hidden behind the combined protection of her grandparents powerful clan magic—and a lie. Although her life has not been worry free, it is when all that desperation and grief cause her to cast her most powerful spell ever…a spell that will end the pain before it begins on the powerful All Hallows Eve.

Fionn Hughes, an immortal tracker, former heir to a powerful clan of time warlocks is on a mission to restore his honor—instead he finds Maeve da Paer. Following the scent of Gardenias and Honey Suckle, he discovers the last Scent Witch. It’s only after she almost takes off his ear that something more stirs, eventually changing his mission from one of duty to one of need.

What will Fionn do when he finds out Maeve plans to cancel out her own existence? Will he be strong enough to stop her?

Fionn Hughes leaned against the brick building, shaking his head in frustration. Upon his father’s insistence, he’d traveled to this cursed century seeking a prize that had been lost. With the death of the warlock, Patrick Sweeney, the powers of time sorcery had gone with him, leaving only the Hughes clan. Fionn’s father would be furious and terribly saddened to know that Sweeney’s wife, Cordelia da Paer, was dead as well. While Fionn didn’t know the details, the marriage had caused the clan’s centuries-long allegiance to sever. Fionn’s father, Laird Rordan Hughes, was soul-weary, and Fionn feared this might send his father over the edge to seek the afterlife.
Before fear could grip him, he decided to continue after the mortal grandchild of the deceased couple. He had followed her from the Sweeney estate to the downtown Halloween festivities. If the mortals knew the truth of All Hallows Eve, they’d put an end to the commercialized debauchery that occurred every year.
Fionn looked up and cursed. The tangled mass of brown curls with auburn highlights he had been tracking disappeared. Panic bubbled up in his innards, but his warrior instinct dismissed it as quickly as it appeared. A strict warning from his father to use his magic sparingly sounded in his memory, but he longed to call up a tracking spell. He offered another colorful Gaelic curse, causing an elderly woman walking by to jump. After a mumbled apology and bow, he jaywalked to the side of the street near the food vendor. The last time he had seen her, the granddaughter had been near the mobile cart offering saturated fat and processed food. Fionn preferred the simpler fare of stews, homemade cheese, and ciders.
Unable to use magic, he took a breath and used skills acquired as a boy under his father’s guidance. Offering his most dazzling smile, he set his charms on a group of older ladies with low cut athletic shoes and fanny packs.
“Good afternoon ladies.” He bowed and the three women turned and giggled in unison.
“Where are you from shoog?” asked the tallest one, a brunette who was obviously the leader. “You have an accent the likes I’ve never heard.”
“Why, I’m from Scotland.” He offered her a smile but then quickly continued. These women were ferocious when it came to gossip. “I’ve lost track of the lass I was with.” Three sets of intensely plucked then re-penciled eyebrows went up and the tracker knew he had them.
“What does she look like?”
“Where did you last see her?”
“Don’t worry dear, we’ll help you.” All sounded in unison in their ages-tarted accents, signature for the region. He couldn’t help but smile and felt a tad guilty for lying to the three helpful grannies.
“She’s about your height, long curly brown hair that has a touch of auburn highlights when the sun hits it.” They sighed in unison. “She had a scarlet shawl tied around a long white skirt…” He would have continued, only the brunette started bouncing up and down.
“That way, she went that way,” she declared, pointing down a dark alley in between two very close buildings.
The earlier panic reappeared. Was the woman a twit? It was a night of danger for not only those of Witchery, but mortals too, and walking down a dark alley was most unwise.
Nodding to the glassy-eyed women, he ran to the end of the alley, then stopped and kneeled. The gravel was disturbed, creating a slight pile. Then, going in a western direction, every few feet there was another mound, before finally it stopped at the edge of a wooded area. Fionn sensed a presence of power in the air. But that could be a combination of the coming night and being so close to the haunted Carton Plantation.
Memories of the gracious MacGavok family pulled at his emotions. He had been injured at the Battle of Franklin, the bloodiest five hours of the Civil War. The family had tended to him as well as many others. Randal and Carrie McGavok were truly two of the noblest mortals Fionn had ever known. They would turn no one away based on skin or uniform color. The bodies of the dead had been stacked four feet high by the end. Later, after the battle, the family unburied and then reburied over fifteen hundred Confederate soldiers, dedicating two acres of their land for a military cemetery. When Fionn had asked his friend why, he’d been admonished that everyone deserved a proper burial and last rights.
Squatting so he could look more closely at the ground, he caught site of small bare footprints in the softened dirt. He grinned in triumph, then scowled. One footprint sunk deeper, indicating she was limping. Had she hurt herself? An urgency he didn’t understand pushed him forward, the sensing of power becoming stronger. But as he traveled deeper into the foliage, a feeling of peace seemed to emanate. He puzzled over the source. That is, until the distinctive smell of Honeysuckles and Shamrocks invaded his nostrils.
A Scent Witch. The scent of Shamrocks was exclusive to that line of witches, and the scent was only detectable through their blood. Whoever she was, she was the last, for he knew of no other. And she was hurt.
Fionn moved at the speed his unnatural immortality allotted him. The panic he’d managed to contain before exploded in his chest. If he could bring her back to his clan, perhaps he would be in his father’s good graces again. The flora opened up in his line of vision creating a half clearing along a stream of water and there, sitting along the edge, was an enticing water nymph with unruly brown hair and auburn highlights created by the sun.
Unable to look away, he watched as she moved her feet in and out of the water, allowing him a generous view of long shapely calves that flowed seamlessly into milky white thighs. His throat tightened as craving burned in him. Desire he hadn’t known in a long time warmed his insides. Fionn was no rogue but he was certainly no saint either. However, he had never felt the stirrings of passion as he did viewing the female before him.
With an easy grace she leaned forward, reaching out with her right arm and bending her right knee up to drape water from her fingertips down her leg. So enchanted by the movement of the elegant beauty he didn’t see the dagger that appeared in her left hand until it took off a lock of his hair before firmly ending in the tree behind him.
The realization that he almost died startled Fionn out of his daze. The wild-haired woman let out a particularly unladylike Gaelic curse, and her eyes looked around as if seeking escape. Finally she stopped, face forward staring at the water, then she looked at him. It was only a moment but, in that instant, he saw what his father had sent him to retrieve: the key to their future. Thick lashes, darker than the brows above them, framed light brown eyes with flecks of gold in them, feline-like in their slanting shape. The Sweeney Eyes. Then she disappeared into the water.

Book Tour: Interview & Giveaway with Xandra James

Xandra James is here today to do an interview and talk a little about her two recent books "Reluctant Revenge" and "Shadow Justice". She is also donating one of her books for a giveaway at the end so don't forget to enter.

I know you get asked this question over and over but can you tell us a little about yourself? Maybe something juicy. ;)

I'm afraid I'm pretty boring, LOL. I'm a British romance writer, married and I dislike celery J

When did you first start writing? Are you a full time author or do you do it on the side?

I started when I was about ten years old. I've always been an avid reader but a friend and I decided we should write a story… and I haven't stopped since. In fact, I never did finish the manuscript from when I was ten. It was a mish-mash of NKOTB love, nonsense and ya romance J A real treat, as you can imagine, lol. Currently, I'm in that transition stage where I'm juggling. I'm hoping to turn full-time later on this year.

Do you have an author that has really inspired you?

I love books that make me smile so I have an affinity for authors such as Janet Evanovich and Kerrelyn Sparks. There's loads more I love but these two kinda set me on a path of writing what I love – romance with a touch of humour on the side.

How long does it normally take you to write an average book or your last book?

Well my two novellas that have already been released took about a week to get a basic storyline together and roughly ten days to actually write. Then I had probably another week thoroughly editing and layering. My last short story which is soon to be released, Her Demon Charms, took about three days to write plus another two weeks of dithering over the end!! I'm usually quite a quick writer when I have an idea of where I'm going and my characters co-operate…

What do you think makes a story great?

That's a tough question. I think it's a combination of things; voice, plot, structure and a little bit of magic. Not all books manage it, but when they do? Kablamo!!! ;)

Can you describe each of your books "Shadow Justice" and “Reluctant Revenge in one sentence?

Err…I'll give it a shot, lol.

Shadow Justice: Desire explodes as a banished bounty hunter teams up with a wanted moon-witch when neither expects to fight a common enemy from their pasts.
Reluctant Revenge: Nash and Sienna's chemistry is electric but can this hybrid hunter, now bound to her by blood, forgive her past and love again?

Tell us a little about these two books.

Here's the blurb for each –
SJ:    Luka was a bounty hunter who just wanted to do his job and get paid. Being a banished Shadow, he'd learnt the bitter lesson long ago that he was alone, after he was expelled from his home world by his own blood. Now, he needed to understand why he was wanted dead whilst his desire for the fiery haired witch erupted, out of control.

As a rare moon-witch, all she'd ever known was a life of misery under the oppressive Fae-Guard. Nine years ago Cerys escaped the Meta-World after regretting the forced banishment of a Shadow. Now, she leads a normal life without her abilities and all she wants is to blend in. When a bounty hunter wants to take her back for a crime she didn't commit, she's willing to take a chance on her future by trusting the man who had no idea she'd wronged him years before

RR:    Nash was bound to Sienna completely – by a blood connection and a deep desire. An Enforcer for the Supranormal community, he was obligated to protect his sexy assignment, despite her family devastating his world.
After being betrayed, Sienna falls into the arms of her surly protector; a demon with a secret of his own. But can she face her destiny knowing she's more dangerous than those Nash was protecting her from?

Have you done lots of research for your books or do the stories just come to you?

For these particular stories, I just let my imagination run free. If I was to ever write in the historical genre, I think it would be a shock to the senses on just how much I would need to research (Work? Pah!! ;)

What are you currently working on?
I've just finished a short story called Her Demon Charms for inclusion in an Evernight Publishing anthology called Keyboards And Kinks. And I'm about to start plotting something else that could be more like a gothic romance… not sure yet. Oh and there's a contemporary novella and a paranormal novella half plotted and ready to go too. Hmm, maybe I should get writing then, huh? :D

Can you tell us about some of your prior achievements?

I'm afraid I'm just a struggling writer! I think the biggest achievement I could list is making it this far in life despite my tendency to be a klutz, LOL ;)

Is there anything that I didn't cover that you would like to talk about or say to your potential readers?

I'm always doing giveaways over at my website or along the way on this blog tour, so come and hi say and keep me company J

Book Tour & Giveaway: "Touched by the Magic" by Maxine Mansfield

Today I have Maxine Mansfield here to promote her new book and host a giveaway. So lets welcome her to Romance Book Junkies.

 Touched by the Magic
By Maxine Mansfield

Genre: Erotic Fantasy
Heat level: 4, Scarlet Rose
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Release date: May 4, 2012

Blurb:
New to The Academy of Magical Arts, Briarlarn Tumbleweed wants to learn the art of a True Healer, but her nerves get the best of her when she’s paired in the sexually dynamic healing class with Uthiel Stoutheart, Paladin of the Realm. Between burning off his eyebrows and overturning a candle on certain exposed male parts, she isn't making a very good impression. But how can she focus when Uthiel is strong, brave, and touches Briar in a way that leaves her weak in the knees, quivering with pleasure, and begging for more?

Falling in love with the accident-prone but talented Briar was not what Uthiel had planned, but life with the sexy healer is adventurous, hilarious, mind-blowingly stimulating, and clearly his destiny. His soul awakens while taking her to new heights of ecstasy, yet he can't allow his own pleasure. There’s no getting around it—he must leave The Academy and pursue his quest to right the wrongs done to his people if he can ever hope to find happiness with Briar.

But is their love strong enough to mend the magic so desperately needed to preserve their world, and that touches both their souls with a searing heat?

Briar gulped once more and shifted until she was directly in front of him. Standing on tiptoes, she whispered, “I’m still a virgin.”

She stepped back and watched all the color drain from Uthiel’s face.

“You’re a what? How on Albrath did that happen?” He stared at her as if she’d grown an extra head. A slight twitch in his left jaw became more pronounced.

“I told you, there wasn’t anyone around to take care of that tiny detail.”

Her cheeks burned with embarrassment, and her throat tightened so much she could barely breathe. If she lived to be a thousand, she didn’t ever again want to see the look of horror Uthiel leveled at her. She felt like a freak in a carnival sideshow.

The paladin sat heavily on a stool. “I’ve never known a twenty-one-year-old virgin. How did you even get accepted into the Healer program? I mean, for God Draka’s sake, Briar, Healing the Soul is almost entirely sex, in one form or another.”

Briar swallowed her tears. “They didn’t ask, so I didn’t tell. Well, really, they didn’t ask directly, and I figured what they didn’t know wouldn’t hurt anyone. So, will you help me, or not?”

Once I read the blurb for this book I knew I had to introduce my readers to this book. So today I'm doing a book promo so you can check this book out yourselves and add it to your TBR pile and maybe you'll even win a copy in the giveaway.

Stealing Breath
By Joanne Brothwell

Deep in the backwoods of North Dakota, Sarah Ross is searching for a missing child when she is attacked by a glowing-eyed, transparent creature.

Using mysterious abilities, Sarah escapes, only to run directly into Evan Valente, a handsome, charismatic stranger who helps her back to safety. But why is Evan out in the forest so early in the morning?

Sarah learns her eyes bear the mark of the Indigo Child, an evolved human with the ability to feel the emotions of others; unfortunately, her indigo aura is highly desirable to those who wish to steal her powerful essence.

Soon, Sarah falls deeply in love with Evan and wants nothing more than to follow her heart, but she can't ignore the lingering feeling that Evan is hiding a terrible secret. The deeper she digs, the more danger she faces, forcing her to face the darkest, innermost parts of her soul.

CHAPTER ONE

I awoke to rustling outside my tent. The crunching of footsteps on gravel, twigs and branches snapping. Was that a voice? I lay motionless inside my sleeping bag, heart pounding, listening.
“Help.” A disembodied whisper. Was it right outside? I strained to hear but the throbbing pulse in my head drowned everything else out. I sat up. The atmosphere within the domed tent was wet, ripe with morning breath. The tip of my nose was cold as an icicle.
“Help.” The murmur came a second time, more audible than the last. I was sure it was a child’s voice. My heart skipped a beat. Could it be the voice of the eight year-old, Jessica Crow, who had gone missing from the neighboring Indian Reservation three days ago?
I thought of the drive out to the campgrounds when my friends, Amber, Kate, and I had been listening to the radio report on the status of the missing girl from the Wakina Reservation.
Poor Amber. Once again, she’d cried at the reminder of her third cousin, Jessica, lost and alone in the forest. Everyone in the community, including Amber, had been searching for her night and day but had found nothing. I’d practically dragged Amber along camping, telling her she needed a night off from her worries. It was a hard sell, but she’d finally agreed.
I glanced at where Kate and Amber should have been laying, but their sleeping bags and pillows were missing. The last I’d seen them had been around the bonfire at two in the morning. They could have ended up crashing just about anywhere, and I wasn’t about to go peeking into random tents to find them.
Having fallen asleep in my jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, I slipped on my jacket and shoes, pulled the ponytail holder off my wrist and wrapped my hair into a tight bun. I swallowed hard and took a deep breath. Then, unzipping the door flap of the dome tent, I stuck just my head out.
Nothing was out of place. Empty cooler bottles atop the picnic table, charred wood in the fire-pit, and the car we came in. Every campsite around us was nearly silent. The sounds of late-night make-out sessions, pounding music, and yelling were replaced by the occasional snore.
Using my empathy, I focused on trying to pick up on the emotions of any lucid person around, hoping I would hone in on Jessica’s emotions. Normally, the waking feelings of others hit me like a gale force wind, without my even trying. In fact, it had always felt like a bit of a curse that I was a walking sponge for other people’s pain. But right now, all I felt was…nothing.
The voice had seemed right outside the tent. Could I have imagined it?
I slipped out. A low, white fog blanketed the earth, enveloping the world in silence. The temperature hovered around freezing, way too cold for camping. And last night’s vodka was no longer taking the edge off. I shivered.
After checking around the cars and circling the campsite, I started down the road. Inside the forest, the eerie glow of early morning and the cool fog blanched the world a ghostly white. The moist nip in the air sharpened the scent of pine needles that littered the camp ground. I continued down the road for about ten feet until it led to the mouth of a hiking trail.
Now that I was half-frozen and shivering, the May long weekend at the campgrounds of Greater Slave Lake, North Dakota, seemed like a very stupid idea, even if it was the annual spring kick-off party.
“Help!” the diminutive voice called out again, this time, louder.
The memory of Jessica’s face flashed through my mind when I’d met her last summer; honey-brown eyes and springy hair that always stuck up around her head with static, and her sweet smile, part baby teeth intermixed with adult teeth. She was such a sweet, innocent child. If she had survived this long, she could be dangerously close to death from cold. My heart battered against my chest wall, and I fought off the urge to start running, directionless, into the bush to find her.
The voice had originated from further within the tree-line, I was sure of it. Closer now, yet still far away. I entered the trail and headed straight.
“Jessica?” I called out. No response but the echo of my own voice from the trees around me.
The trail was straight and narrow for well over a hundred feet, the trees like two solid walls of green on either side of me. Then the trail began to snake back and forth until it forked into several side-trails. I stopped to listen.
A dry crackle emerged from the trail to my right, and I immediately followed the sound. This far into the forest it was darker, the only light filtered through evergreens and fog. I looked back. The vapor had closed in behind me, obscuring the pathway like a curtain of white. Shivering transformed into shaking.
Despite running these trails in the early morning numerous times, today it looked different. I cursed under my breath and shoved my hands into my pockets.
“Hello?” I called, my voice immediately diminishing, muffled by the woods. Other than the odd bird chirp and frog croak, the forest was quiet. If the voice really had been Jessica, she would need help and most likely immediate medical attention. I forced myself forward.
The trail wound to and fro, the brush dense, the fog almost material as it clung to the spruce needles. The path grew thin and sparse, barely enough room to place one foot in front of the other, with the way the underbrush encroached on the trail. I stumbled on twigs and logs as branches clawed my cheeks and pulled my hair. I began to trip, reaching out for something to hang onto. I fell, my hand forced into a thorny bush.
Damn it! I stood up and peered at my scraped hand, blood beading out of paper-cut sized scrapes. I’d been out here for at least ten minutes, but still, I heard nothing but the crunch of my feet snapping the twigs underfoot and my breath echoing through my own head. Ready to turn around and head back to my tent, the high-pitched voice rang out once again.
“Help.”
