The ladies at Bitten by Paranormal Romance came up with this great idea of doing a educational blog hop about what a 3 star rating means to us then on March 30th we are going to have some authors on our blogs talking about what they think about receiving a 3 star rating. I thought this could be a lot of fun and clear up a lot of concerns people have about the 3 star rating so I decided to participate and I hope you will participate as well. I currently have the flu so my post won't be all that I really wanted it to be but I'm going to give it my best shot.
What do I think about when giving a 3 star rating?
1. On my blog I have my 3 star rating described as a enjoyable read, an average book.
2. I consider a 3 star rating to be a good rating.
3. This is a book that I enjoyed to read and I think the author did a good job with the plot and character development with no large flaws.
4. This is a book that I didn't find to be boring or slow at any parts at all but it wasn't necessarily a page turner either.
5. A average book is a good read worth your time but nothing really amazing.
6. A book I give a 3 star rating is one that I would recommend to fans of that genre but not something I would go around advertising to everyone.
7. If I give a 3 star rating to a book I would hope that my readers would seriously consider reading it sometime if it's subject matter is something their interested in from reading the blurb.
And on that note I would like you to tell me in the comments whether or not you consider reading a book I've rated a 3.
Don't forget to hop around to the other blogs participating in the hop to see what they think about when giving a 3 star rating and come back tomorrow and see what our authors think about receiving a 3 star rating.

First, I am glad for the subject of this hop and second, I like how you describe your rating. It is what I think too. When I see a three star, it just tells me that the book can go either way as far as 'I like it' or 'this probably just wasn't my cup of tea'. I've read many three star books and loved them.
Hope you feel better!
First: Get better soon!
I totally agree with all your statements. 3s are very good ratings and totally worth the time to check out. They are by no means bad!
Sophia makes a valid point. I also always look to reviewers who share my reading interests or have liked a past book for the same reasons I liked it.
Hope you feel better soon sweetie!
excellent breakdown, I loved this point: "This is a book that I enjoyed to read and I think the author did a good job with the plot and character development with no large flaws." perfect description, you should send it to goodreads, LOL!
I buy books all the time with a 3 star rating... not every book is a 4/5 star to every reader. I find 3 star reviews to be really honest, and they help me find books that fit me. Book Savvy Babe
I think you did a great job at explaining the 3 star rating. :)
It's hard, isn't it? I mean, when you really love a book, it is (usually) easy to tell the readers why. Same thing with a book that just didn't do it for you--at all. But the books that fall somewhere inbetween those two extremes--now that's where, I think, the true reviewer comes through, being able to explain that the book was good--but not OMG Great. It's still worth the time and the money, and you don't regret reading it. That it is an author that you will return to, and one that you will recommend to other fans, even if it didn't blow you away.
I don't look down on 3 stars, but I know it's hard, and sometimes a bt daunting, giving a 3 star review (especially if the author sent you the book to review...I always feel slightly bad if I'm not sending them back a 5 star review, but I don't let this feeling influence my opinion on the book!). I've bought many books that other readers, readers I trust, have said are only 3 stars. Heck, I've even bought a few books that fellow bloggers have only given 2 stars! It's all in the eye of the reader. :) What works for you may not work for me, and vice versa.
But that's the beauty of having the blogs and reviews to visit, find out what the books are about, what made them great (or not) and then making a decision on whether or not this is the book for you. I've had some people tell me that while they liked my review for a 5 star book, it's not something they're sold on yet, or it's not a book they're interested in. And that's fine! I've also had some say that a book I gave 2 stars to sounds like one they'd still like to read--and that's fine too, I encourage it, even!
Thanks for sharing with us--and sorry my comment ending up being so long. Oops. Lol.
Enjoy!

Wow great and simple list but said everything I want to say.
A 3 rating is definitely a positive rating for me as well. I liked it. It's a good book with no major flaws, but after reading it I don't feel like singing its praises to everyone who would listen lol. I guess I think of it more as a "beach read", where you're reading for the heck of it and get enjoyment for that moment. It's definitely not a book that stays with me long after I finish it like those rated 4 or 5 stars.

I do still read books with 3 stars ratings... It's not bad...
I very much appreciate the insight into the various book bloggers about what a 3 star means! I hope you are feeling better. :-)
