Guest Post: "My Immortal" by Lee Rudnicki

I happy to have Lee Rudnicki on the blog today to do a guest post and share a little about his book "My Immortal".

Hi everybody.  Happy Tuesday.  My name is Lee Rudnicki, I’m a writer and producer in Los Angeles, and happy to be appearing on Romance Book Junkies. Thanks for checking out this random guest blog post by an author you probably haven’t heard of yet, but maybe you will soon.  Or you have just now. Or something like that. Anyway … Hello.  Thanks for checking in. Long story short, I just published a novel called My Immortal: The Vampires of Berlin.

Upon a time, I had to self-publish My Immortal to get anybody to read it.  True story.  It’s is a different book, you see.  In fact, the creative process of writing it was kinda-sorta backwards, the screenplay came first.  Which sounds fun, but writing a novel based on a screenplay is only easy and fun in theory. Second, My Immortal contains intense depictions of supernatural violence.  This is a literary roller coaster meant to terrify.  It is not a book for little kids or the faint of heart.

So as the story goes, I published My Immortal myself last year, and it sold well.  Then bada boom, bada bing, a magical book signing in Burbank and an appearance in Entertainment Weekly later, the book that broke every rule of writing a novel 400x got a publisher, 23 House.  Cool beans, no?

What is this novel about? Well, My Immortal is a paranormal action adventure, set in present day Berlin and also on the last day of World War II. Structurally, it’s Titanic; present day scenes serve as bookends to a tale from the past.

The 1945 adventure begins in Berlin Cathedral, where Sebastian and Wolf, the sole survivors of a German tank crew find a dazed girl named Eva wandering around in the ruins.  It’s not technically a romance, but Sebastian falls in love with Eva, who turns out to be a very special young woman…

Enjoy ..

THE MIRACLE

Axel stirred just as Sebastian emerged from the darkness with Eva. “Kill the devil girl!” he gasped.

Overcome by emotion, Klaus got up and pointed his rifle at Eva. “We need to get rid of her. The vampires will stop hunting us. We’ll be safe.”

Sebastian put himself directly into the line of fire. “Easy there, soldier. We’re all on the same side.”

Klaus didn’t flinch. “How many more of us have to die because of her? You have a genius plan to get out of Berlin. That’s what you guys told us, and that’s why we followed you. We don't need this vampire shit!”

Sebastian put his hand over the muzzle. “Put the rifle down. I’m not going to let you shoot her.”

The old man’s voice broke with emotion. “Get out of my way! She is not your daughter! Your daughter is dead! I will shoot that witch!”

“Shoot her!” Dieter shouted.

Just as Klaus began the muscle contractions on his index finger to shoot, Sebastian moved at lightening speed and tackled him. Dieter jumped onto Sebastian’s back, but ended up on the ground next to his grandfather a split-second later. With his growing strength, Sebastian could have easily killed them both. Instead, he held them down just hard enough to prevent them from hurting someone.

Unnoticed during the mêlée, Eva knelt down and put her hands on Axel’s face. She closed her eyes as a soft blue glow emanated from her palms. The horribly burned pilot moaned and tried to push her away as the light grew brighter, but Eva kept her hands firmly on him.

Dieter noticed the light. “Stop!” he yelled. “She’s hurting him!”

Eva took her hands away from Axel and crumpled to the ground.

Sebastian released his grip and the fight ground to a halt.

Klaus ran to the pilot’s side. “Are you all right? Axel, are you still alive? Talk to me!”

Axel pulled his hands away from his face.

Klaus gasped. “Oh my God …”

Ooh this sounds fabulous. Very few good native english books that are set in Berlin. I'll definitely have to pick this one up.
