Review: "Afterlight" by Elle Jasper

"Afterlight"

Series: Dark Ink Chronicles #1
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 336
Published: November 2010 by Signet

Goodreads Blurb:
Savannah's most unconventional tattoo artist, Riley Poe, lives on the edge. Now she's put over the edge when her younger brother is taken by a sinister cult led by vampires. Her only ally is the hot-tempered vampire Eli Dupre, attracted to Riley's beauty and rare blood type. To save her brother from certain un-death, Riley faces dangers she's never dreamed of, ruthless bloodthirsty enemies, and an evil of endless hunger that wants to devour it all...

My Review:
This is a new favorite author for me. I absolutely loved this book from beginning till the end. Riley is a recovering drug addict that has seen some very deep and dark places but what's coming next is going to take her to a whole new level. Riley gave up her old lifestyle to provide for her brother, which she loves dearly. Ever since quitting her old lifestyle she has trained to be a badass fighter. Riley is one of those kickass heroines that aren't scared of much.

Eli is a drop dead gorgeous vampire on the good side and is assigned to protect Riley after her brother gets involved with a group of boys that are going through the change to become a vampire. Eli is not only drop dead gorgeous but he is also lethal, strong, protective and in control.

The relationship between Riley and Eli is a bet of an annoyance in the beginning for Riley because she doesn't like having  him in her house. And she surely doesn't like being told what to do when she can take care of her self. But eventually they can't keep their hands off each other and thats when the story gets hot.

This book was written at a great pace. It was a great page turner that flowed beautifully. It had a great balance of action, relationship development and romance. Sometimes I get aggrevated with cliff hangers but I loved the ending of this book I was really happy with it and it was also perfectly set up for the next book.

I would recommend this book to fans of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. Normally UF lacks romance but this book didn't and that was one of the things I loved. There is some violence and sex scenes but nothing to crazy. So if you haven't read this book or added it to you list of books to read you need to do that right now because this book is a must read!

I have a guest today! Jen @ Magic Faerie's Paranormal Review

Today I have a guest on my blog. I was thinking about how I would really like to get to know the actual people behind the blogs better. And I figured if I'm interested there are probably more readers out there who are interested like me.

So, today I have the Jen here to do a fun interview about herself and her reading habits/preferences.
She has a blog called Magic Faerie's Paranormal Review and if you haven't checked her blog out yet you need to head over there. (after the interview of course) =) She also has a group on Goodreads called Paranormal Addicts and Newbies - Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy which is how I originally met her and its lots of fun so you should head over and see if your interested in joining. The group participates in monthly group reads, discussions and more fun stuff so check it out. (After the interview hehe). :)

1. Tell us a little about yourself. Anything interesting we should know about? Maybe something juicy? :
I have no idea where to start really, I don't think I'm very interesting but I'll have a go!  I live in the UK and love that I've made friends all over the world via the blogging community.  I'm a coffee addict and love chocolate and cheese (not together!).  I like to always be busy, I somehow find the time to work full time, study for my second degree, read about two books a week, work on my blog and reading others, running a PNR/UF group online, making jewelery, learning Latin (or trying to), walking, family history research and my counseling course (and more usually too!).  Sorry nothing juicy :)

2. How long have you been reading? When did you start? When did you officially become addicted?
I've always been a reader but the amount I read varies a lot over my life!  I started as a five year old reading the Famous Five books by Enid Blyton, I used to be allowed to read only one chapter a day so I guess that was the first time I became addicted.  I read some but much less once I started work but then I started reading a lot again mid 2009 after I finished my work qualification so that's when my current addiction started.

3.What genre did you start reading first? Or have you always read romance novels?
I started out with mystery, adventure type books - too young for romance at 5 or 6!  I started to read romance in my early teens (do any of you remember the Sweet Dreams series of teen romance books?) and have been reading a wide variety of romance ever since.

4. What are your favorite genres now?
At the moment my favorite genres are urban fantasy and paranormal romance, which I tend to make a very wide definition of!  I like to mix it up a bit though so you might find me reading mystery, Sci-Fi, chick lit, or anything else you care to name!

5. Is there any genres you don't like? Why?
I don't really dislike any genre, but I need to be in the right mood for something like horror or I find it difficult to read.

6. If you had to guess how many books you have read in your lifetime how many would it be?
In my lifetime - that's a hard question!  Not really sure, it must be well over 500 but under 1000.  I'd have read near to 100 by the time I was about 12.  Some years though I might only have read 10 novels.  If I include all the non-fiction for my BA you can add about 200 to that figure!

7. How long does it usually take you to read an average book?
I'm not the fastest reader so an average length novel takes me about 3 or 4 days, I've been known to read a 700 page novel in one day but I don't have much time for anything else!

8. What is your review style? Any formulas? :)
I don't have a formula really.  I always include details about the book and the blurb from the back cover, the rest is my thoughts and feelings about the book.  I'm always honest in my reviews but try not to be mean.  I usually talk about the characters, storyline, writing style, pace etc and anything I thought worked really well, or not.  The length varies as I have more to say about some books than others!

9. Do you tend to judge a book by it's cover?

I try not to, but the truth is I do sometimes especially when I'm in the bookstore browsing.  If I'm buying online or getting books from the library I usually know what book I want, from recommendations etc, so the cover does not tend to bother me.  Also, being in the UK our covers are different to the US ones so I'm constantly comparing them too!

10. What are you reading now?
Mind Games by Carolyn Crane - really enjoying it too!

This or That?

Hardback or Paperback? Paperback, hardback, ebook I like them all!
Dog ears or Bookmarks? Bookmarks
YA novels or Adult novels? Adult
Library or Bookstore? Both!!
Reading glasses or No glasses? No glasses (not for reading anyway!)
Snack while reading or No snacks? Depends on my mood!
Beach or Mountain? Mountain
Vampire or Werewolf? Werewolf
Hot or Flirty? Both please!
Movie 1st or Book 1st? Book 1st every time!!
Contemporary or Historical? Contemporary
Page-Turner or Tear Jerker?  Page-Turner

Thanks Jen it has been a magical interview. hehe :) I appreciate you sharing with us a little about you and I wish you lots of luck on your blog.

In My Mailbox (3)

Photobucket

The in my mailbox meme is hosted by The Story Siren. This meme is were everyone tells about what books they received during the week.
I received three books this week and a signed poster of Shadow Hills.

Books I got for review:

Biting the Bride"Biting the Bride" by Clare Willis
Some men are worth sticking your neck out for…

Sunni Marquette has always been a little different. There’s the whole mind-reading thing, for a start, which comes in useful for a criminal defense attorney. Except that lately, Sunni keeps encountering people who are immune to her gift. Like Jacob Eddington, the star witness in her latest case. And her best friend Isabel’s new fiancé, Richard Lazarus, who’s as sinister as Jacob is attractive. Not that Sunni intends to interfere—until she learns that Richard is a vampire who’s made a centuries-long career of marrying wealthy women, then killing them for their inheritance.

Sunni is convinced Jacob is a vampire, too, and that he’s her only chance of saving Isabel. With his help, she’ll discover powers she never knew she possessed, an enemy who’s closer than she could have ever guessed, and the kind of love that’s worth staking everything on—if she can just stay alive long enough to enjoy it…

"Crazy" by Eve Langlais

Ella hears voices and they don’t like anyone.

Institutionalized at a young age after the breakup of her parents, Ella’s always heard voices. Even worse, the voices in her head like to act. She thinks she’s crazy and destined to be a patient for life until the night she meets a vampire and for the first time in her life, the voices shut up.

Zane just wants to enjoy his usual blood buffet, instead he runs into a wisp of a woman who makes him feel emotions he thought long dead. Rescuing her from the insane asylum, he brings her home, determined to assuage his lust; a plan that is foiled by ghostly voices more determined to keep her pure than a steel welded chastity belt.

Together they discover Ella might not be as crazy as everyone thinks, but even as they discover her innate power, someone from her past wants to hurt her. Will crazy and undead prevail against covetous evil? And most important of all, will the voices ever allow them to indulge in the desire that consumes them?

Genre: Vampire/Paranormal Romance
Heat Level: Very Hot (18+)

I won:
Shadow Hills "Shadow Hills" by Anastasia Hopcus

After her sister Athena's tragic death, it's obvious that grief-stricken Persephone "Phe" Archer no longer belongs in Los Angeles. Hoping to make sense of her sister's sudden demise and the cryptic dreams following it, Phe abandons her bubbly LA life to attend an uptight East Coast preparatory school in Shadow Hills, MA — a school which her sister mysteriously mentioned in her last diary entry before she died.

Once there, Phe quickly realizes that something is deeply amiss in her new town. Not only does Shadow Hills' history boast an unexplained epidemic that decimated hundreds of its citizens in the 1700s, but its modern townies also seem eerily psychic, with the bizarre ability to bend metal. Even Zach — the gorgeous stranger Phe meets and immediately begins to lust after — seems as if he is hiding something serious. Phe is determined to get to the bottom of it. The longer she stays there, the more she suspects that her sister's untimely death and her own destiny are intricately linked to those who reside in Shadow Hills.

Thanks Good Choice Reading

2011 Historical Romance Challenge - Update

Photobucket

It was brought to my attention that only US residents would be able to win the monthly prize because of shipping cost. I do not want to leave anyone out so what I'm going to do is every other month I will have a international prize either a ebook or a book from the Book Depository.

International participants will get a entry if they post their reviews every month like originally planned. I will just include all the entries they have accumulated into the next international giveaway. This way they may be left out every other month but they can still earn entries every month and have two entries into the international giveaways.

I hope this all makes since but if you have questions just leave a comment and I will answer any you may have.

Thanks Chriz for bringing that to my attention. :) I would hate to leave all my international participants out of the fun.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I totally blew my diet but I'm only human right? One of the things I'm grateful for this Thanksgiving is all my awesome followers and friends in the blogging world. =) What are you grateful for?

Do you judge a book by the cover?

Here is my pick for this weeks beautiful cover. I hope the story is just as good.

Why I picked this book cover?
I choose this book cover because I've read all the books in this series up until this one and all the covers have been so beautiful and this one tops them all. It could also be because I love the color purple. hehe :)

All I Want For Christmas Is...

This is a feature/meme created by Danya @  A Tapestry of Words where you choose a book each week leading up to Christmas and say why it's made it onto your wishlist – and I'd love to see what books everyone else is hoping to get! So if you want to make your own blog post about it, please link up here. :)

My pick for this week is...

"Grave Witch" by Kalayna Price
Series: Alex Craft #1
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 325
Author's website: http://www.kalayna.com
Published: September 2010 by Roc

Goodreads Blurb:
As a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex Craft has seen a lot of dark magic. But even though she’s on good terms with Death himself—who happens to look fantastic in a pair of jeans—nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Alex is investigating a high profile murder when she’s attacked by the ‘shade’ she’s raising, which should be impossible. To top off her day, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, but Death saves her. Guess he likes having her around…

To solve this case Alex will have to team up with tough homicide detective Falin Andrews. Falin seems to be hiding something—though it’s certainly not his dislike of Alex—but Alex knows she needs his help to navigate the tangled webs of mortal and paranormal politics, and to track down a killer wielding a magic so malevolent, it may cost Alex her life…and her soul.

Why I added this one to my Christmas wishlist:
I've heard wonderful things about this book and it sounds great. I really enjoy books involving witches such as Anya Bast's series Elemental Witches. The cover on this book helps too it's awesome.

I have a guest today! Sophia @ Fiction Vixen Book Reviews

Today I have a guest on my blog. I was thinking about how I would really like to get to know the actual people behind the blogs better. And I figured if I'm interested there are probably more readers out there who are interested like me.

So, today I have Sophia here to do a fun interview about herself and her reading habits/preferences.
Sophia has a blog called Fiction Vixen Book Reviews and if you haven't checked her blog out yet you need to head over there. (after the interview of course) =)

1. Tell us a little about yourself. Anything interesting we should know about? Maybe something juicy? :)
I am the least interesting person I know!  I’ll just give you the abbreviated version of my boringness: Reader of urban fantasy, paranormal, historical and contemporary romance. Wife, mom, blogger, coffee drinker, iPhone addict, Kindle lover. And a bunch of other stuff too.

2. How long have you been reading? When did you start? When did you officially become addicted?
I’ve read off and on most of my life as circumstances permit.  As a kid I loved the Trixie Belden series and Judy Blume books.  As a teen, I read things like Flowers In The Attic by V.C. Andrews (I know) and I snuck in an historical romance here and there.  Now that my kids are not babies anymore I have a little more time to read and blog and I would say I officially became addicted after discovering paranormal romance via Twilight by Stephenie Meyers.

3. What genre did you start reading first? Or have you always read romance novels?
As a kid I liked mysteries etc.  As an adult, it’s always been romance.  I just can’t get enough of it.

4. What are your favorite genres now?
Romance still remains my favorite genre, but this past year I have really enjoyed urban fantasy, especially romantic urban fantasy.  I don’t always need a strong romantic storyline when reading urban fantasy though.

5. Is there any genres you don't like? Why?
I don’t care for horror.  I don’t mind elements of horror in my urban fantasy etc. but I don’t care for the gory, grizzly stuff.

6. If you had to guess how many books you have read in your lifetime how many would it be?
I have no idea.  I read over 150 last year and about that so far this year, so…you get the picture. :)

7. How long does it usually take you to read an average book?
It really depends on what’s going on in my life.  Usually 1-3 days.

8. What is your review style? Any formulas? :)
I like to do a brief summary, discuss whatever it was about the book that stood out for me, bring up what didn’t work, and then sum up. Some reviews are more in-depth than others, it really just depends on the book and how I felt about it.

9. Do you tend to judge a book by it's cover?
Unfortunately, sometimes I do.  There are some covers I can’t get past to open the book.  If something about the cover turns me off, I’m more likely to pass it by.  On the other hand, a pretty cover gets my attention in a hurry.

10. What are you reading now?
The Princess In His Bed by Lila DiPasqua.  It’s a retelling a three classic fairy tales with a little spice added.  I loved her debut Awakened by A Kiss.

This or That?

Hardback or Paperback? – e-book.
:)
Dog ears or Bookmarks? – bookmarks
YA novels or Adult novels? – adult novels
Library or Bookstore? - both
Reading glasses or No glasses? – reading glasses
Snack while reading or No snacks? – no snacks
Beach or Mountain? – mountain
Vampire or Werewolf? – werewolf
Hot or Flirty? - Both
Movie 1st or Book 1st? - Book first
Contemporary or Historical? - Historical (but I still love contemp)
Page-Turner or Tear Jerker? - Page-turner

Thanks for stopping by Sophia. It was a lot of fun. :)

In My Mailbox (2)

Photobucket

The in my mailbox meme is hosted by The Story Siren. This meme is were everyone tells about what books they received during the week.
I only received one book in the mail and some swag this week.

Books I won:
Seven Nights to Forever"Seven Nights to Forever"
by Evangeline Collins
I won this book at Fiction Vixen Book Reviews.
First, let me tell you that the picture of the cover on the internet gives no justice to the cover in person. It is absolutely beautiful and I normally don't care for the make out session on the cover but this one is so pretty.

*I am going to be saving this book for my 2011 Historical Romance Challenge that starts in January.

A few days after receiving this book I got another envelope from Evangeline Collins herself. It contained a card congratulating me on my win and she included about 10 signed bookmarks. How cool is that? You can be looking for those signed bookmarks in my giveaways. :)

"Second Sight" by Amanda Quick
Series: Arcane Society #1
Genre: Historical & Paranormal Romance
Pages: 301
ISBN: 9780451230942
Author's website: http://www.krentz-quick.com
Published: March 2007 by Jove

Goodreads Blurb:
Financially straitened and on the path to spinsterhood, Venetia Milton thought her stay at the remote, ramshackle Arcane House would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engineer her own ravishment. She was there to photograph the artifacts collected by a highly secretive organization, founded two centuries earlier by an alchemist. And the alchemist's descendant-her employer, Gabriel Jones-has the eyes of a sorcerer.

But despite Venetia's intent to seduce Mr. Jones and move on, she is shattered upon her return home to read in the press of his violent demise. Using the sizable fee Mr. Jones paid her, Venetia establishes a new life, opening a gallery in London. Of course, posing as a respectable widow makes it easier to do business, so-in a private tribute to her lost, only lover-she assumes the identity of "Mrs. Jones."

Her romantic whim, however, will cause unexpected trouble. For one thing, Mr. Jones is about to stride, living and breathing, back into Venetia's life. And the two share more than a passionate memory-indeed, they are bonded by a highly unusual sort of vision, one that goes far beyond Venetia's abilities as a photographer. They also share a terrible threat-for someone has stolen a centuries-old notebook from Arcane House that contains a formula believed to enhance psychic powers of the kind Gabriel and Venetia possess. And the thief wants to know more-even if he must kill the keeper of the Arcane Society's treasures, or the photographer who catalogued them, to obtain such knowledge.

Why I added this one to my Christmas wishlist:
I chose this book because it has been on my wish list for so long and I hear that its a great series. I really like books about witches and things like that so I think I would really enjoy this book.
