Paws with a Cause Fundraiser Day #5 - Laura Kaye

Thanks to Danielle for inviting me to Romance Book Junkies to participate in this week’s Pet Week Charity for Paws for a Cause. I’ve always been a huge animal lover and love, love, love dogs, especially my dog, who is the best dog in the world. Here’s his 411:

Name: Jackson

Breed: German Shepard – Collie Mix

Birthday: January 1

Age: 11 years, 2 months

Weight: 52 pounds

When we got Jack from the Alexandria, Virginia, animal shelter in 2002, he was just 11 weeks old. His name in the shelter was Horace—seriously, Horace! He was small enough he could fit in my palm with his little legs hanging over. He was so small, in fact, he could walk underneath my neighbor’s dog’s belly – and that guy was a Westie and they have, like, no legs. LOL Today, I’d like to tell you more about Jackson. Also known as:

Jack
Jack Attack

Bad Dog Jack

Jackson Brown

Jackson Brown Dog on the Town

Moo

MooMoo

JackyMooMoo
MoomerMoo

Pooh

Pook

Pooker

The Mayor of Pookerville

Good Boy

I’m sure I’m missing a few aliases! *g* Now, up top there, I said Jack is the best dog in the world, and here are some reasons why:

Hugs. Jack gives hugs. Like, real hugs. If you sit on the floor with him, he’ll put his front paws around your neck and tuck his face against yours. And his paws actually cling to your shoulders. It is the cutest thing EVER! And who doesn’t like hugs??? Especially soft, furry one.

He Gets Me. If I sit or lay next to Jack and say, “Get Mommy,” he will rub his face on mine (we call this “doing facey” LOL). And he’ll do this as many times as I say it. Seriously. You would die of the cute.

Easily Entertained. If Jack can’t get one of us to play with a toy with him, he doesn’t it himself. He’ll get a stuffed animal or chew toy and throw it across the room, and then go pounce on it like we threw it for him. He’ll keep this up until we’re so sucked in by the cute that we’ll go do the throwing for him.

Protective. You’ve never heard a dog bark so loud when there’s a noise at the front door. Now, it could be leaves blowing as well as someone actually knocking, but still… He also shows his protectiveness by refusing to let us play Rock-Paper-Scissors. By the time you count to “two” and the second pump of your fist, he shoves his body in between and barks until you stop. I think he thinks we’re going to punch each other. (Despite the leaves and this, he really is smart. Really.)

Opens Presents. Jack is very useful when it’s time to open presents. He’ll use his paws to hold a box down and his teeth to carefully shred pieces of giftwrap off. Then he spits it out and gets the next piece. He’ll also do this to toilet paper or paper towels, but never mind that.

Spotted Tongue. Seriously, he has a big pink tongue with black spots on it. Sometimes you’ll see him with his tongue hanging out of his head and there are all these spots. It’s a total conversation opener with other pet owners. LOL (It probably also means he has some Chow in him…)

Bombproof. Ever heard this phrase ascribed to dogs? It means no matter what you do to them, they don’t freak out or get aggressive. Jack is the gentlest dog ever, which is a good thing when you have little kids who want to ride him and pet him and tug on him and squeeze him and love him real good. LOL

So, there you go, some reasons why my dog Jack rocks the doggy world, and completely owns my heart!

Thanks for reading!

PAWS® increases awareness of the rights and roles of Assistance Dog teams through education and advocacy.  Founded in 1979, Paws With A Cause is dedicated to helping its clients who are challenged by many disabilities, such as Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Seizure Disorders, and Hearing Disorders to name just some.  Each of our dogs are trained to meet the specific needs of our clients. Tasks may include opening and closing doors, picking up objects, pulling a wheelchair, turning lights on and off, and alerting a person to particular sounds like a telephone, doorbell, smoke detector and many others. Our dogs change lives by enhancing the independence of our clients. By just opening a door, a dog opens up the world for a person with a disability and your donations will go to making that happen.  PAWS thanks you so much for your donation and allowing us to open more doors.

Love! My last dog had a black spot on her tongue, too. The vet said it was caused by excess melatonin, just like my freckles!

Your Jack sounds wonderful. And I love the cause! Thanks for posting and hosting, RBJ!

Oh, that's interesting, Kathryn! Maybe that explains Jack's tongue, too! :)

Love when my rescue dog - Tess - covers up her eyes when she rolls over to get you to love on her tummy. Looks just like a kid covering their face!
