Guest Post & Giveaway: "The Corpse Goddess" by Kristi Jones

I have Kristi Jones on my blog today for a great guest post and giveaway. She is giving away 5 ebook copies of "The Corpse Goddess" an Urban Fantasy novel.

Try It to Write It?
I recently lurked during an eye opening e-conversation between some romance writers. An author asked a group of experienced romance writers if they had any suggestions for lists of sexual fetishes. The conversation quickly jumped to writing what you know, with some writers going so far as to say that you shouldn’t write about anything you haven’t tried, that the readers will know and despise you for it.
I wonder….the old maxim, write what you know, seems out-dated to me. I write about zombies and, as far as I know, I’ve never been a zombie. (I did do some ultra cool research on the decomp process though.) I also write about Valkyries - I’ve never met one.
Obviously, sex is something we can all do, but does that mean you need to do it all in order to write about it? God, I hope not! I’m currently working on a sexy little novella about a fearless American soldier in Iraq and the Valkyrie dying to claim him. The sexiest part of the story is what she can’t do to him.
As a writer, I sometimes think it’s sexier to write about what I haven’t experienced and I know as a reader, I want to escape. Besides, am I the only one who reads steamy stuff to get new ideas?
And even if you have done it all – is there an all? Somehow I think sexual exploration is like space exploration….it goes on ad infinitum. But just for the sake of argument, if you have done it all, does that necessarily mean that you can write about it in a sexy way? For me, a recent bestseller is proof that the answer is a resounding no. (Assuming said author has gone out and done her research.)
I’m not saying a writer shouldn’t do her research, and by God, my husband appreciates my diligence in that area, but…
My real life is so real. Real sex is great, mind blowing even, but it can also be uncomfortable, noisy, messy - and not always in a good way. (I don’t want to read about vaginal farts. Just saying.)  And let’s face it, heathen hordes are not beating a path to my door, sparkling vampires aren’t sweeping me away to the tree tops and gorgeous men in kilts aren’t battling for my hand. Nobody is tearing my bodice from my supple, heaving breasts…though I’m sure my husband would like to try that one, I think it might just hurt. I can imagine all sorts of wonderful things. Naughty things. If readers sniff me out and guess that I haven’t had my privates whipped with a hot poker, bully for them. Doesn’t mean we can’t all enjoy the fiction though, does it?

Party girl Meg Highbury wakes up the morning of her twenty-first birthday with one hell of a hangover – and a walking corpse in her apartment.  Meg turns to her straight-laced neighbor Armando for help and together they discover that Meg is a Valkyrie.

What’s more, her first duty is to trade places with the corpse.  But Meg is being sent to her Death Duty too soon. In a race against time, Meg frantically tries to find a loophole to her gruesome fate, but while Meg is determined to live whatever the cost, Armando's strict moral principles keep getting in the way of her plans for escape.

Can Meg walk the 'right' and narrow path, possibly sacrificing her mortal life, for love? And if she can, will Armando have the stomach to love a rotting corpse of a girl who is falling apart in more ways than one?

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd want a man tearing the bodice from my... hmmm, I guess they're not so supple any more, heaving breasts. Not only does it seem like it would hurt, there goes a perfectly good bodice. Love the post!

@Lisa, yeah, mine probably aren't so supple either, but a little strategic lighting and I think I can fake it! :)
